UNLOCKING THE CAGE SCREENING

What would the world look like if non-human animals were granted legal personhood? That is the challenge that the Nonhuman Rights Project (NhRP) is set to find out.

Come discover the enthralling legal battle of the Nonhuman Rights Project, a nonprofit organisation making history by filing the first lawsuits that seek to transform the status of an animal in the law, from a 'thing' with no right to a 'person' with legal protections. The Nonhuman Rights Project is, to date, the closest we have ever come to recognise animals to have legal personae and it will be fascinating to hear your thoughts on the topic after the screening!

Hope to see you all on Thursday 1st March at 6:30pm in Hebertson Room, at the School of Geography and the Environment (off to South Parks Road)!

HELPING ANIMALS AROUND THE GLOBE: JANE GOODALL INSTITUTE & IAPWA

Come join us on Wednesday 14th February at 5:30pm to find out how you can get involved with animal welfare NGOs! The Oxford VegSoc is very excited to welcome Nicky Stevens, the Founder and Director of the International Aid for the Protection and Welfare of Animals (IAPWA) and Manoj Gautam, Executive Director of the Jane Goodall Institute Nepal.

IAPWA is a UK registered charity dedicated to creating a better future for animals in need. Nicky will share her experience of managing a growing NGO – IAPWA started off as a street dog management programme in Borneo in 2009 and has since then expanded its missions to include fighting against the dog meat trade in the Philippines and rehabilitating elephants in Zambia!

Manoj, who is currently completing his Master’s in Biodiversity Conservation at Oxford, is a passionate advocate for animal welfare and has recently succeeded in ending the traditional use of dancing bears in Nepal, by confiscating the last two dancing bears! Nicky and Manoj will be presenting the launch of their project aimed at providing better care to street dogs in Nepal.

Plus, exciting opportunities await you if you wish to contribute to raise funds for IAPWA. Nicky will outline how you can take part in one of their overseas challenges, such as climbing the Mount Everest!

We look forward to seeing you all on Wednesday – the talk given by Nicky and Manoj will be followed by an informal discussion with drinks and vegan snacks :)

BLACKFISH FILM SCREENING

Oxford VegSoc is thrilled to invite you to its very first event of Hilary Term!

In 2010, the orca trainer Dawn Brancheau was fatally injured as she "fell" into the tank where the orca Tilikum was. This prompted a group of journalists to investigate the conditions of captivity of orcas and other marine mammals at the park Sea World. The release of Blackfish in 2013 sparked international outrage against Sea World, which even decided to stop orcas breeding.

But the Blackfish story does not end here. A Bill to ban the breeding of orcas is currently being discussed in the US House of Representatives. This Government Bill is also fiercely opposed by Sea World.

Come join us on 7th February to reflect on this controversial documentary that will surely challenge your views on the use of wildlife for entertainment. After the screening, we’ll try to debunk the myth of performance animals in what promises to be a lively discussion!
