Wonderfully Wicked

As far as vegan ‘grab n go’ lunches and microwave meals go, supermarket options are usually poor or non-existent. Tesco have changed the game. So much is refreshing about their new twenty piece range, ‘Wicked Kitchen’. The name epitomises the branding’s very different route to the stereotypical green, healthy and ‘free from’ marketing that plagues vegan food as ‘abnormal’ and bland. Not only is there a knife on the packaging but a streak of bright orange paste, on top of which black and bold font demands attention on the shelf.

The thought given to texture is mostly impressive. Nobody wants to eat a bowl of mush and in many of the dishes there are crunchy elements (try the Spicy Frijoles Wrap) or chunks and chewy pieces for variation.

Flavour completes ‘Wicked Kitchen’. Through spices and umami sauces, the taste is intense and often fiery. As gurus in plant based cooking for centuries, Asian influences are rightly explored, as are the flavours of Mexico and the Deep South, best tasted through the Mesquite-style BBQ sauce.

This ambitious new range can only be critiqued on price, perhaps being a little too dear to persuade non-vegans to pick them up. The usual sandwich-snack-drink meal deal, at £3, will only get you a single ‘Wicked Kitchen’ wrap or sandwich. However, the packaging and ingredients certainly appear more premium and the astonishing number of options is bound to tempt! A great addition to Veganuary and not a range people who have tasted will forget about any time soon.
